After receiving a major overhaul earlier this year, the Samsung Health app has been given another upgrade to make the platform more accessible, particularly when it comes to sleep tracking.
Previously, if you bought a Samsung Galaxy Watch and wanted to gain insight into the quality of your sleep, then you would have to wait seven days before the software could decipher what kind of sleeper you are, before bestowing on you an indicative ‘Sleep Animal’ that would best describe your circadian rhythm.
Well, that process has now been shortened thanks to the addition of a survey which users can fill out, detailing key bits of information such as their alcohol/caffeine intake and overall sleep satisfaction. After completion, a sleep animal can now be assigned after just three days of overnight tracking in a two-week period.
Given that Samsung’s approach to sleep tracking is one of the better ones out there (alongside Huawei), it’s nice to see that users can get straight into actionable insights a lot faster.

The way that collected sleep data is presented has also changed, with the Samsung Health app now showing a pentagon-shaped Sleep Balance graph, within which there are five key areas of note: sleep time, sleep regularity, time spent awake, sleep satisfaction and your Energy Score.
Sleep Coaching requires Samsung Health v6.24 or newer on a Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later. You can then pair it with a Galaxy Watch 4 or newer, a Galaxy Fit 3 or newer, or a Galaxy Ring.
On top of this change to sleep tracking, Samsung has also expanded its Running Coach feature, adding an extra two levels on top of the previous ability cap of 10, so avid runners who don’t think twice about signing up to an ultra-marathon are now better served by this guided software.
Given that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and the more rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are still fairly fresh on the scene, this update feels well timed to give them an added boost, particularly now that their competing Apple Watch alternatives have been revealed.
